Privacy policy

Walk Awêh collects no personal data. There are no accounts, no cookies, and no third-party tracking scripts. We use Vercel Analytics to collect anonymised, aggregated page view data, no cookies are set and no individual users are tracked. The app works without knowing anything about you.

We do not collect, store, or transmit:

• Your name, email address, or any contact details
• Your location or GPS coordinates
• Device identifiers or browser fingerprints
• Cookies of any kind

There are no third-party analytics scripts (no Google Analytics, Meta Pixel, Hotjar, or equivalent) on either walkaweh.co.za or walkaweh.app.

Both the main website (walkaweh.co.za) and the app (walkaweh.app) may store small amounts of data in your browser's localStorage. This data is:

• Stored entirely on your own device — it never leaves your browser
• Never transmitted to any server
• Cleared automatically when you clear your browser data

Examples of what the app stores locally:

• Cached weather data per trail location (with timestamp)
• Checklist progress, keyed by trail and date — resets automatically the next day
• A visit counter used to time the PWA install prompt
• A flag recording whether you dismissed the install prompt

None of this constitutes personal data. It exists only to make the app faster and more useful between sessions.

Trail weather is fetched from Open-Meteo, a free and open-source weather API. Requests are made directly from your browser to Open-Meteo's servers. Walk Awêh does not proxy or log these requests. Open-Meteo's own privacy policy applies to those requests.

Guide listings display contact information (phone number and email address) provided directly by guides at the time of listing. This information is published for hikers to make direct contact.

Walk Awêh does not process, store, or have access to any communications between hikers and guides. When you tap a WhatsApp or email button, your device opens WhatsApp or your mail app directly. Walk Awêh is not involved in that communication.

If you apply to be listed as a guide, your application is submitted via a Google Form. Google's privacy policy applies to data submitted through that form. We use the information you provide solely to assess your application and, if approved, populate your listing. We do not share it with third parties.

Both walkaweh.co.za and walkaweh.app are hosted on Vercel. Vercel may collect standard server access logs (IP address, request path, timestamp) as part of normal CDN and hosting operations. These logs are subject to Vercel's privacy policy. Walk Awêh does not have access to or control over these logs.

Walk Awêh uses Vercel Analytics to understand how the app and main website are being used. Vercel Analytics collects anonymised, aggregated data, including page views, referring URLs, device type, and country, without setting cookies or collecting any personally identifiable information. No individual users are tracked across sessions or pages. This data is used solely to improve the app and is subject to Vercel's privacy policy.

Walk Awêh is intended for general audiences. We do not knowingly collect any information from children under 13. Since we collect no personal data from anyone, no special provisions are required.

If this policy changes materially, the "Last updated" date at the top of this page will be updated. We will not introduce data collection practices without updating this policy first.
